Perhaps you lack confidence, perhaps it is the lack of a mentor or coach, but many people have opportunities for high profile projects and they either turn them down or turn them over to someone else without a real reason. They feel they can’t do what would be required and don’t try. They hold themselves back. They are in competition with other brands for clients and media attention, yet pass on the best opportunities to make themselves stand out. Does this sound like YOU?
Are You Holding Yourself Back?
Being noticed is important in order for you to reach your goals. But for some reason, many entrepreneurs want to hide behind their computer and blend into the crowd of online business owners. YOU need to stop holding yourself back, here are some tips to help.
Tips to Stop Holding Yourself Back
Communications Skills – Poor communication skills are embarrassing and can lead people to misunderstand what you believe in, what you stand for, and your ability to get the job done. Work to become the best communicator you can be. Learn to create and convey a succinct point of view. Work on both the written and spoken communication skills. Sloppy communication will hurt you and your business more than you know. Delivering a message in a clear, concise and compelling manner will make you stand out. Seize every opportunity to speak in front of groups, no matter what the size. You have heard the saying, “Practice makes perfect!” You don’t have to be perfect but you want to improve. Take pride in every written communication and ensure your grammar is correct. Communication skills are like muscles – stretching them will make you stronger.
Market Yourself and Your Business – You have to tell people about your business. The idea that you can just put your business on the web and customers will flock to it is crazy. You have to sell yourself, advertise, do press releases, social media promotion and more. If you don’t believe in yourself, no one else will believe in you either. So put yourself out there and be bold!
Break Your Large Goals into Small Achievable Steps – Those giant goals can be scary. They seem overwhelming at times. But break those big goals into smaller achievable steps and watch yourself whip the goal into shape. I do this all the time with projects. A great example is writing a book. Thinking you have to write 30,000 words seems almost impossible, but break it down into 500 words a day and you would have it finished in 60 days. Your desk is a cluttered mess, but choose one drawer to tackle a day and then one surface area. In a week, your desk will be tidy. Any large goal can be broken down into smaller steps that work to accomplish any project.
Make it Your Goal to Serve – If you are worried about coming off to0 much like a salesman, make it your goal to find as many people to help as you can. Don’t think of it as selling them. Think of it as helping them. If what you are promoting will make a positive difference in their lives, then you should have no trouble helping them. If it won’t make a difference and you are just trying to sell, sell, sell and don’t care about helping, then you need to find another service or product.
Celebrate Your Success – Too often we are modest about our successes. We are afraid to tell anyone or fear people will think we are boasting. When we don’t share our success and celebrate with others, people don’t know how awesome we are. There are lots of ways to share without bragging. When receiving an honor or award, you can share on social media with a picture or announcing how much you appreciate the acknowledgement. You can send press releases to the papers. When it is a personal success you can share through a blog post or social media how hard you have worked to meet a goal. Host a sale in celebration of your success, Do a new giveaway in honor of your achievement. Take a day off for personal celebration and take a few pics of the fun to share.
These are just a few of the steps you can take to stop holding yourself back. Think about the entrepreneurs who are successful, do they hold themselves back? Start today to make changes in your attitude and actions and you will be amazed at what you can accomplish.
